Age Friendly Community

The world’s population is aging rapidly, and this is also happening in our country. In order to respond to the needs related to aging and to make life easier for the elderly, the World Health Organization proposes a series of measures to make every locality more age-friendly. These improvements focus on enhancing the following aspects:

Benefits of an Age-Friendly Community (AFC):

  • People are informed, heard, and have a platform to contribute their ideas.
  • The community offers welcoming spaces and events that foster interaction between people of all ages, reducing isolation.
  • Regardless of age, individuals feel important and can utilize their skills to benefit the community.
  • People are supportive and caring of each other, with the most vulnerable not being left behind
  • Infrastructure is adapted to accommodate people with special needs, promoting equal access and participation.
  • People are involved in creating a community in which they would like to grow old.

Since 2017, communities in the Republic of Moldova have also embraced becoming age-friendly. Citizens from 15 localities across the Florești, Șoldănești, Rezina, and Sîngerei districts have successfully developed over 200 age-friendly initiatives. These communities’ experiences have been compiled into the Good Practice Guide for Developing an Age-Friendly Community.

In 2020, another 10 localities from the Fălești and Edineț districts joined these communities. In 2021, the Fălești District Age-Friendly Community Strategy was developed, which includes district-level action plans aimed at improving the lives of older adults.
