INTERGENERATIONAL DIALOGUE: THE KEY TO AN INCLUSIVE SOCIETY
| 03.03.2025The risk of isolation and misunderstanding between generations is increasing in a society where the pace of change is constantly accelerating. In the Republic of Moldova, this trend is exacerbated by an aging population and socio-economic challenges. Intergenerational dialogue is becoming a necessity, not just an option to counteract these effects.
In this context, NGO “CASMED” organized a training session on “Psycho-social Aspects of Communication and Interaction with the Elderly,” in which young people from Dondușeni, Pelivan, Rîbnița, and Dubăsari had the opportunity to develop their theoretical knowledge and build the skills necessary for social interaction with the elderly.
This activity was realized within the project “Strengthening social cohesion in the Republic of Moldova through dialogue and empowerment of communities on both banks of the Dniester”, funded by the Swiss Cooperation Office in the Republic of Moldova and implemented by UNFPA Moldova with the support of „CASMED” NGO.
The training, facilitated by Sandu Solcan, psychologist at “CASMED” NGO, aimed to provide participants with the necessary tools to overcome communication barriers and build authentic relationships with elderly people. By exploring the psychosocial aspects of communication, the goal was to achieve a deeper understanding of the specific needs, challenges, and opportunities of the third age.
The training session emphasized the importance of a deep understanding of the psychological and social changes specific to the third age. Participants explored emotional aspects such as anxiety, loneliness, and fear of the future, as well as the desire for peace and stability. Social aspects such as the reduction of the social circle, the need for support, and the desire to remain active, as well as cognitive aspects related to memory, attention, and information processing, were also addressed.
An important segment of the training was dedicated to dismantling negative stereotypes associated with the elderly. Participants learned to recognize and combat myths such as the inability to learn new technologies or physical and mental weakness. Specific crises of the third age, such as the crisis of uselessness, loneliness, health, and self-esteem, were also discussed, and practical solutions were identified to overcome them.
The training session also highlighted the advantages of old age, such as life experience, time for self-fulfillment, stress reduction, stability, and emotional maturity. Participants learned effective communication techniques with the elderly, based on patience, empathy, active listening, respect for autonomy, and encouragement of communication.
The training emphasized that old age brings both challenges and opportunities. Empathetic and respectful communication is essential to support the activity and self-fulfillment of the elderly, to respect their unique characteristics, and to improve their quality of life.
Participants appreciated the practical and interactive approach of the training, as well as the opportunity to share experiences and learn from each other. They stated that the training provided them with a new perspective on the third age and strengthened their communication and interaction skills with elderly people.
This training represents an important step in promoting an inclusive and respectful society towards the elderly. Empathetic communication and understanding the specific needs of this age group are essential to build harmonious relationships and ensure a dignified and active life for all members of the community.
“CASMED” NGO through its efforts, not only responds to the immediate needs of the elderly but also invests in the future of a society where every person, regardless of age, feels valued and respected. By expanding its initiatives, CASMED contributes to building a more equitable and solidary society, where the links between generations are the foundation of a prosperous and harmonious community.
