| 12.06.2024The most active seniors in the Republic of Moldova gathered in Bălți to promote practices of active and healthy aging. Participants urged authorities to implement measures aimed at improving the quality of life for seniors in Moldova, ensuring them a decent, dignified, and inclusive living.
On June 10, 2024, in the city of Bălți, the first edition of the “Seniors’ Forum – a change platform” took place, dedicated to active aging and improving the quality of life for the elderly in Moldova. The forum was an essential opportunity to highlight the successes and initiatives of senior communities, promoting collaboration and improving the quality of life for all elderly people in the country. The event brought together 160 participants, including representatives of seniors from 40 initiative groups from the districts of Ocnița, Edineț, Glodeni, Drochia, Ungheni, Sângerei, Călărași, Strășeni, Anenii Noi, Fălești, Șoldănești, and Râșcani. Also present were members of the National Network of Active Seniors, experts from the Foreign Policy Association of Moldova, and media representatives.
The forum started with the presentation of preliminary results of the project “Empowering Moldovan Seniors and Communities” conducted in 19 communities in the north of the country. During the discussion panel “Progress and Benefits for European Seniors,” representatives of the Foreign Policy Association, Natalia Stercul, Ion Tăbîrță, and Mark Mazureanu, analyzed European strategies and policies for promoting an active and healthy lifestyle among seniors. The discussions highlighted best practices, challenges faced, and innovative solutions that can be adopted to improve the quality of life for elderly people in the Republic of Moldova.
The seniors demonstrated their enthusiasm and energy by participating in various creative workshops, including: preparing mixtures of medicinal and aromatic herbs, making traditional masks and dolls from corn husks, origami, painting, decorating cookies, and making objects from beads.
Ana Spânu, community mediator within the Public Association “CASMED,” presented the main findings of the study “Social Participation of the Elderly in Rural Areas.” The study offers a clear perspective on the impact of programs and policies dedicated to active and healthy aging, highlighting effective ways to facilitate seniors’ participation in social life and the benefits of this participation for the community.
The event culminated with the adoption of the Seniors’ Resolution, a document addressed to the authorities of the Republic of Moldova, requesting the promotion and protection of seniors’ rights and interests, thereby complementing the provisions of the National Program for Active Aging 2023-2027.
This document reflects the problems and challenges faced by seniors in the Republic of Moldova, as well as proposals and requests to national authorities to build a more inclusive society and provide all seniors with equal opportunities to live a dignified and active life in their communities.
